Queen Victoria Pub - A Proper British Pub and Slanted Taco - Authentic Mexican Fare - thaifoodies.co
One of my favorite things about living in Bangkok is the quantity of awesome restaurants, bars, cafes, clubs etc - yes, yes, I know I've said that before but Metropolitan Bangkok for all its size is a very condensed city, especially along Sukhumvit Rd. Hopping from spot to spot is super easy either by the BTS, cab, motorcycle or simply walking.
When were about ready to launch the thaifoodies.co site we decided to choose a location close to home where we could work on our photography, video and the format of our videos.
We chose the Queen Victoria Pub in Sukhumvit soi 23, Asoke because it has been a favorite pub of ours for years but also because it is quiet in the afternoons so we hoped we wouldn't disturb the punters. Well, we did in fact do a review of the Queen Vic but a few too many pints led us to an impromptu review of a restaurant we'd never been before - Slanted Taco, which incidentally is a one minute walk from the Queen Vic, where we proceeded to inspect the menu with great gusto as well as their famous margaritas.
The Queen Vic is a very traditional Brit pub with all your favourites like Bangers in Mash, Toad in the Hole, meat pies, chip butties etc. They also have very, very good Thai food. When I moved to the Asoke area I was amazed at how good the food is at The Queen Vic and I'm sure i gained more than a couple pounds enjoying their delicious food. Being on the quiet side, the Queen Vic is a great place to enjoy your favorite sports on the weekends or just chill with a good book. The atmosphere is calm and congenial, the service friendly. If you want a sports bar environment then this is not the place for you. We at Thaifoodies.co love the Queen Vic for its chill vibe, good food, and cold beer. Happy hour starts soon!
The Slanted Taco, as one would expect, was quite a different experience. A small, one room establishment inside the IPA beer garden inside Sukhumvit soi 23 - click the link above for directions. The inside is all glowing neon and vibrant energy. Latin music plays in the background and the patrons here are engaged in raucous conversation. Upon entering you immediately notice the wonderful spicy smell of mexican food and your stomach yearns for the first savory bite of a spicy taco. All your mexican favorites are here served quick and pipping hot, best accompanied by a margarita or two.
Thaifoodies will come back to both these great eateries and create a video review in more detail but suffice it to say you should check out both these wonderful locales if you find yourself in the neighborhood. Sukhumvit soi 23 is a 5 minute walk from the Asoke BTS and Sukhumvit MTR. Every taxi driver in Bangkok knows the soi as it is the home of the infamous red light district Soi Cowboy so you should have no problem getting there.
